"Unsacred Seed" is the self-titled debut full-length studio album by Canadian (London, Ontario based) death/groove metal act Unsacred Seed. The album is a self-released affair available as a digital "Name Your Price" download on the band´s Bandcamp profile. The album was released in April 2013.
The band play an interesting combination of death metal (with a "core" edge), melodic death metal and groove metal... of all things. They have a very contemporary sound with very few nods toward old school death metal. The vocals are deep growling but predominantly higher pitched screaming type vocals. The material are generally well written but as a result of the many stylistic elements the flow of the album is also disturbed a bit. The incoherence is already heard between the first two tracks on the album. Where "Deus Ex" is a technically well played death metal track, "Hundred Courts" find the band completely embracing groove metal riffing although still within a death metal context. Sometimes the combination of death metal and groove metal riffing works wonders, but other times the sudden appearance of a groovy riff seems a bit malplaced.
Considering that this is an independently released album, the sound production is decent and "Unsacred Seed" overall comes off as a professional product. The musicianship are strong, the songwriting interesting and as mentioned the sound production is pretty well sounding too. A 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is warranted.
