Formed in 1970 around ex-Deep Purple bassist Nick Simper, Warhorse were understandably close to early Deep Purple in their blend of keyboard-colored progressive rock and early heavy metal. The group coalesced when Simper left Deep Purple in 1969 to lead soul singer Marsha Hunt's backing band, which included Rick Wakeman on keyboards for a while. The backing band formed the nucleus of Warhorse, which recorded a couple of albums for Vertigo in the early 1970s. With their early hard rock/metal sounds and a singer (Ashley Holt) who could roll into over-serious, high stentorian vocal phrases, the group have also been compared to early Black Sabbath, although they lacked the hooks necessary to achieve the same level of success as Sabbath or Purple. Echoes of Yes (in the keyboards) and perhaps Uriah Heep can be heard as well. Warhorse broke up in 1973, with drummer Mac Poole joining Gong, and Holt read more...

An interesting mix between Symphonic Prog and Proto Heavy Metal is this "Red Sea". Nick Simper Research a different dimension has been created by a Deep Purple Mk I clone band. The final result is not bad but the album, very good (of course), is not compact, because in possession of too soul and because too psychedelic for atmospheres, as if the music is very close to a Prog Rock/ Hard Rock that also today is good for who please this type of music.

Strange is the fact that Simper did not continue the process started with "Red Sea" where the music does not express the concept as fully as it should be non-explosive. Clearly, then, "Red Sea" disappoints. But "Red Sea" is an album with the attributes: as technically is valid as few, the feeling that transmit is very good. Just missing the magic. Also, if you listen carefully, "Red Sea" conveys the impression that each musician plays for himself, without that the result is an album of the group. But, proper for this senation it is good, very good, Mac Poole's drums solo in "Mouthpiece" (that is a must if you love Zeppelin's "moby Dick" or Rush's "YYZ").

IMHO, "Red Sea" is an embrional album of a concept. And for the fact that the concept is express only with this album "Red Sea" disappoint. But "Red Sea" is a good album, after all.

Interesting album, debut of former Deep Purple bassplayer Nick Simper band Warhorse. Musically it is the evolution of Deep Purple Mk I. So nothing new under the sun. It should be noted, fortunately, that the Progressive Rock and Hard Rock components are amalgamated and not remain divided as Deep Purple Mk I. The sound is unbalanced in favor of the organ, rather than on the electric guitar, which, however, is present with very technical scores. Feeling and magic are in the foreground, even for the use of Psychedelic and POP atmospheres, supported by well-sung by Ashley Holt, though not with a not dynamic and memorable style. Fortunately, "Warhorse" has aged very well indeed.

I've Akarma version with 5 bonus tracks (all extremely interesting)but, in general, "Warhorse" is expression of a good band, band that really deserved success.
