WEREWOLVES What a Time to Be Alive

"What a Time to Be Alive" is the second full-length studio album by Australian death metal act Werewolves. The album was released through Prosthetic Records in Jaunary 2021, less than a year after the release of their debut full-length studio alhum "The Dead Are Screaming" from April 2020. Werewolves formed in 2019 and features Psycroptic drummer David Haley in the lineup. Guitarist Matt Wilcock and lead vocalist/bassist Sam Bean are both associated with acts like Abramelin, The Antichrist Imperium, and The Berzerker, and the trio can in that respect be called an Australian underground extreme metal supergroup.

Stylistically the material on "What a Time to Be Alive" is a continuation of the relatively standard quality deathgrind of "The Dead Are Screaming" (2020). The two albums sound much alike, and if you enjoyed the debut, chances are you´ll enjoy this one just as much. Werewolves are a well playing unit, and the shifts between deep growling vocals and higher pitched aggressive snarling works well here. As mentioned above the songwriting is pretty standard for the genre though, and not much stands out as being particularly memorable beyond the playing time.

"What a Time to Be Alive" is well produced, featuring a sound production which suits the material well, but overall I get the same feeling about this one as I did with the debut album. Something is missing for this to reach excellence. Still a 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is warranted.

"Deathmetal" is an EP release by Australian death metal/deathgrind act Werewolves. The EP was independently released in March 2022. It bridges the gap between Werewolves' second- and third full-length studio albums "What a Time to Be Alive" (January 2021) and "From the Cave to the Grave" (June 2022).

The EP features four tracks and a total playing time of 13.53 minutes. Two originals and two covers of Deicide and Marduk. "Harvest of the Skulls" would appear on "From the Cave to the Grave" later the same year and "I Hate Therefore I Am" would subsequently appear on Werewolves fourth full-length studio album "My Enemies Look and Sound like Me" (August 2023). So neither are particularly worth the investment if you already own the studio albums which followed, but evaluated on their own merits and the time of release (before the two tracks became available on the following album releases), this is pretty much what you expect from werewolves. Brutal, fast-paced (although "Harvest of the Skulls" is actually on of their heavier and slower songs), and relentlessly aggressive death metal/deathgrind performed by a very well playing unit.

The covers of "Behind the Light Thou Shall Rise" (by Deicide) and "Christ Raping Black Metal" (by Marduk) are decent enough. Well performed and delivered with the right energy and aggression, but none of them stand out as anything out of the ordinary for Werewolves and both could just as well have been included on their albums and you almost wouldn´t have noticed that they weren´t just another original by Werewolves. The Marduk track of course has a more blackened edge to it, but other than that it sounds a lot like a Werewolves song.

All in all "Deathmetal" is a good quality EP release from Werewolves, featuring a well sounding production job, skilled performances, and some decent quality material. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

WEREWOLVES Die for Us

"Die for Us" is the fifth full-length studio album by Australian death metal/deathgrind act Werewolves. The album was independently released in July 2024. It´s the successor to "My Enemies Look and Sound like Me" from August 2023. The lineup hasn´t changed since Werewolves formed in 2019, so it´s still David Haley on drums, Matt Wilcock on guitars and vocals, and Sam Bean performing vocals and bass. Related to artists like Akercocke, Abramelin, Faustian, The Berzerker, and Psycroptic these guys are quite prolific both on the Australian and the international death metal scene.

Stylistically "Die for Us" more or less continues down the same death metal/deathgrind road that Werewolves have travelled since day one. Artists like Terrorizer and Coldworker are pretty valid references. It´s fast, brutal, and aggressive deathgrind with heavier death metal moments thrown in here and there. The vocals vary between death metal growling and sligtly more aggressive snarling/growling. To my ears, the otherwise very well sounding production job, is a bit too clear for this type of music, and I wouldn´t have minded a bit more grit and filth. It would probably have made the music even more effectful.

But if you´re here to get your faced kicked in Werewolves are a safe bet. "Die for Us" is a relentlessly brutal death metal/deathgrind release featuring a caustic level of aggression. The band are well playing too and upon conclusion "Die for Us" is another good quality death metal/deathgrind release from Werewolves. They don´t invent the wheel or produce anything particularly unique, but there´s plenty of quality here to warrant a 3.5 star (70%) rating.

WEREWOLVES The Dead Are Screaming

"The Dead Are Screaming" is the debut full-length studio album by Australian death metal act Werewolves. The album was released through Prosthetic Records in April 2020. Werewolves formed in 2019 and features among others Psycroptic drummer David Haley in the ranks. Guitarist Matt Wilcock and lead vocalist/bassist Sam Bean are both associated with acts like Abramelin, The Antichrist Imperium, and The Berzerker. So Werewolves is pretty much an Australian underground extreme metal supergroup.

Stylistically this is brutal and vicious sounding deathgrind featuring both deep growling vocals and occasionally raw snarling vocals. Not surprisingly the music is predominantly very fast-paced, but Werewolves also play mid-paced heavy parts. While this is not a one to one direct comparison, I´d say references to an artist like Terrorizer are valid. "The Dead Are Screaming" aren´t the most unique sounding deathgrind release on the scene, although it´s certainly well composed, but Werewolves more than anything win because they are skilled musicians performing their music with great passion and conviction.

"The Dead Are Screaming" features a raw, detailed, and powerful sounding production job, perfectly suiting the material. So while Werewolves still need to tweek their songwriting just a bit to make their songs a little more memorable, "The Dead Are Screaming" is still a high quality deathgrind release, and a 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

WEREWOLVES My Enemies Look and Sound like Me

UMUR
"My Enemies Look And Sound Like Me" is the fourth full-length studio album by Australian death metal/deathgrind act Werewolves. The album was released through Prosthetic Records in August 2023. It´s the successor to "From the Cave to the Grave" from June 2022. No lineup changes have taken place since the last album, or indeed since Werewolves formed in 2019, so the band still consists of the trio of drummer David Haley, guitarist Matt Wilcock, and lead vocalist/bassist Sam Bean.

Four albums in four years is quite unusual these days, but apparently Werewolves have opted for the old school approach of releasing new material every year. The only issue with that is that all their albums pretty much sound the same. The same death metal/deathgrind playing style, the same type of brutal, detailed, but also sterile sounding production values, and compositions which don´t stand out on the individual albums. You could take any song from this album and place it on one of the preceding releases and no one would notice.

So basically the material on "My Enemies Look And Sound Like Me" is more of the same. If you enjoyed the previous releases, you´re very likely to enjoy this album too, but if you´re like me and haven´t really been won over by Werewolves rather pedestrian take on the death metal/deathgrind genre, this album won´t change a thing for you.

As said it´s all decently composed, well performed, and professionally produced, but I miss gritt and some darkness to the whole thing. An example of the rather flat feeling I get when listening to this album, is the vocals. They are pretty standard death metal growling, and they arguably get the job done, but after one or two songs it becomes apparent that they are one-dimensional and delivered without much emotion or variation. It´s just the same song after song after song. They somewhat remind me of the Swedes in Coldworker, who also features a well known drummer from another band (in that case Nasum, in the case of Werewolves it´s Psycroptic).

So upon conclusion "My Enemies Look And Sound Like Me" is another decent quality death metal/deathgrind album from Werewolves that on the surface looks and sounds pretty good, but if you dig a little deeper lacks most of the things which make an album in this genre great. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
