I discovered Y&T on sometime in 2011 or 2012 and I quite enjoyed some of their glam metal stuff with rich backing vocals and awesome guitar solos. I listened to their classic 80's albums Eartshaker (1981) and Mean Streak (1983), but I was most hooked by their follow-up In Rock We Trust (1984). I've given it a few more chances in recent months to see if this music would still work for me.

In short - it works. The fine-tuned sound has just the right groove for me, Dave Meniketti's voice was dealing with some serious rough sawing, and his guitar soloing usually comes at the best possible moments. There's a catchy riff at the core of almost every song included, my favorites probably being in the hits Masters and Slaves, Rock & Roll's Gonna Save the World and Don't Stop Runnin'. The last one is also my absolute number one on the album, primary because of the awesome chorus with vocal answers. I'm also having fun with the wilderness She's a Liar, in whose verses the bass rips into runs with jazz roots under the guitar chords. On the other hand, the two included ballads (I'll Keep on Believin' (Do You Know) and This Time) don't make me sit on my ass as the band sounds quite replaceable in them - especially the second of them, in essentially identical form, could very well be in the repertoire of band such as Journey.

From the lyrics of the first three songs one could get the impression that In Rock We Trust would be a philippic against the rulers of this world and a warning against the war that the imaginary chess of earthly strongmen could cause - even after forty years this theme is not completely passé. But beyond that, it's along the tried-and-true relationship line, oscillating between the self-praise of a kicked-off desperado (Don't Stop Runnin') and a paean to the girl who gives a guy a hard time in bed on demand. In between, of course, you'll find plenty of self-centred lovelorn despair, of which the aforementioned Journey were masters. Fortunately, I can enjoy most rock music quite well without concentrating on the lyrics any more, so as long as it doesn't offer topics for deeper thought, it's not a major obstacle for me.

I've been friends with In Rock We Trust over and over again because Dave Meniketti and co. have managed to deliver the music on this album in a catchy yet uninhibited way. This mix of riffs and melodies is quintessentially 80s in the best sense of the word.

Y & T Mean Streak

Monday nights - way back in 1983/4 - Vancouver's rock station, CFOX, used to have a half hour (or was it an hour) of air time devoted to playing new hard rock and metal releases. My friend told me about the radio program and so the next Monday night, I tuned in. The first song they played was "Mean Streak", the title track of this album. I was totally thrilled. That riff had something that I had not yet heard (granted, at this point my cassette collection was limited to AC/DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Def Leppard, and Quiet Riot, so there was plenty of room for "new").

It wasn't long before Y&T's "Mean Streak" took its place in my cassette carrying case. The album is the third in a trio of early metal albums ("Earth Shaker" and "Black Tiger" are the other two) where Y&T were grittier, crunchier, and had more grind to their music than their next two releases would have. This was not the smiling music from Sunset Boulevard but San Francisco Bay rock that had grown out of the seventies and had firmly established itself by the 80's.

That killer title track about a gold-digging woman lends itslef to one of Dave Meniketti's trademark blazing solos that then mellows out into a nice rock melody before that killer riff rams into the song like a churning machine crashing through the factory wall. It's still one of my favourite Y&T songs.

Though it's hard to keep up with that kind of pace, the rest of the album delivers very well. Y&T later on recorded some beautiful power ballads but they are not to found here. What we have here is good solid heavy rock that bumps and rolls throughout the album. "Lonely Side of Town" is a bit slower, "Midnight in Tokyo" has a strong melody against the metallic play of guitars, and "Take You to the Limit" is slower in tempo but still has a nice hard rock feel. "Hang 'em High" and "Breaking Away" are more straightforward rockers. The final track on the original release, "Down and Dirty" is just a good time rock tune and a fun ending to a very good album.

In a way, this album is stereotypical of hard rock/metal of this era. But as this is the band's fifth album and it was released in their 10th year as a band, they really have the format down pat. Different from "Black Tiger" and slightly more so than "Earth Shaker" (the latter of the two was a bit harder and faster, IMO), "Mean Streak" was the last of the albums released before Y&T began turning to a more radio friendly sound that would score them a couple of songs regularly played on the air waves. Dave Meniketti and company have really put together a solid hard rock album, all sweat and tense muscles, no pop and bounce.

I think this album is not essential to anyone who prefers heavier stuff like Iron Maiden or even heavier like Celtic Frost. But if you're into good serious hard rock with some great riffs and solos, I'd say it's a pretty essential album to check out. It's just too good to be only "good but not essential" hence 3 and a half stars.

Y&T, or also known as Yesterday & Today, reached their first commercial milestone in 1984, after a groundbreaking release of "In Rock We Trust" that shot their name to the surface. This is the band's highest charting and selling album, racking up gold status, and became the only album that penetrated the Canadian chart. The concept of this album is to polish their hard rock foundation with a glam metal touch that's became a mass interest in the mid 80s.

In my opinion, strongest tracks of the album are : "Rock And Roll's Gonna Save The World", an AC/DC-soaked opener with an anthemic and firey chorus; "I'll Keep On Believin'", a Survivor-like power ballad with a huge sing-along chorus; "Don't Stop Runnin'", an uptempo stadium-chanting track with a gigantic and memorable chorus, also stand high as the peak of the album; and the passionate ballad, "This Time", which is also a very well written song.

There are several other good tracks such as "Masters and Slaves", "Break Out Tonight!", and "Lipstick And Leather" which has a thick Kiss breeze, but too bad, couple of fillers such as "Life,Life,Life" and "She's A Liar" here lessen the total value of the album. However, with a bowl of hot hits, "In Rock We Trust" remained a great piece of history of the band's career and a great pick for fans of hard rock/glam metal.
