PAUL CHAIN — Alkahest (review)

Warthur
Paul Chain's Alkahest at first seems to offer fairly standard traditional doom metal, but careful listens to this occult collection soon reveals psychedelic undercurrents adding a shot of acid to your standard stoner fare, with some NWOBHM touches here and there that give the album a curiously timeless air. Drawing on the best of 1970s, 1980s and 1990s metal, Paul Chain and band put together an enjoyable experience which is kept from perfection (but not dragged down into ruination) by somewhat uninspiring vocals. Sepulchral Life could have done with a little editing, but otherwise a solid album worth the time of any doom metal fan.
