Between The Real And Uncertain is an EP release by Russion technical death metal act Grievous Ramble in True Hereafter ( or G.R.I.T.H.). It´s the band´s debut release. The band are a three-piece on this release consisting of Vlad Tatarsky on guitars and vocals, Isupov Mihail on drums and Alex on bass.

The EP features 6 tracks and a total playing time of 24:26 minutes. The music style is technical death metal. The vocals are deep and most of the time undecipherable and rather monotone growls. Technical death metal is usually hit and miss for me. Some bands take the technical approach so far that they end up sacrificing power in the process, but that´s fortunately not the case with Grievous Ramble in True Hereafter. The music certainly is technical with tempo- and time signature changes in spades, but the band never loses sight of death metal power and brutality. When that is said it´s actually mostly the vocals that takes the music into a brutal direction on this EP. The tracks are varied and features intriguing structures and many challenging details to feast on. In addition to that there´s the excellent musicianship and a pretty good production to boot. I took a look at the band´s Myspace and they site artists like Opeth, Death, Cynic, Aghora, Necrophagist as influences and while Grievous Ramble in True Hereafter certainly isn´t a copycat, I think those influences make sense when you listen to the songs on the EP.

I´ve been pleasantly surprised by Between The Real And Uncertain and for a debut release this is a rather high quality product. I prefer more decipherable growling vocals than these and if I have to voice a small complaint it would be about the vocals, but bearing in mind that it´s an aquired taste if you enjoy vocals as brutal and monotone as these, I think the EP deserves a 3.5 - 4 star rating. This is a band that could go places. Keep an eye out.
