"Blue Blood" is an EP release by German music artist Atrocity. The EP was released through Nuclear Blast Records in October 1989. It´s the successor to the October 1988 "Instigators" demo and it displays a completely different musical direction from Atrocity. The EP was recorded at Masterplan Studio, Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, Germany, and Atrocity have managed to produce a pretty well sounding release, although it´s of course both raw and savage sounding...just the way it´s suppossed to be.

Having played thrash metal/crossover thrash metal under the Instigator monicker since 1985, the band changed their name to Atrocity shortly before recording the "Instigators" demo, which felt like the death breath of the band´s crossover thrash metal period, because only a year down the line from the demo release Atrocity presents us with this three track, 10:47 minutes long "Blue Blood" EP, which features a brutal, fast-paced, and aggressive deathgrind style which is far removed from the crossover thrash metal style of the preceding demo.

The title track smashes the listener to bits and it´s an incredibly rewarding deathgrind song, but already this early on Atrocity showed that they weren´t content with being labelled just one thing and "When the Fire Burns over the Sea" is an odd experimental track which is closer in style to Swans than it is to contemporary releases by artists like Napalm Death and Terrorizer. "Humans Lost Humanity" opens as a doomy death metal track but about halfway into the track it turns into a hardcore influenced deathgrinding affair.

So over the course of three tracks and 10 minutes playing time Atrocity show the listener quite a few songwriting ideas and musical styles...warning shots fired in terms of the eclectic nature of the subsequent releases and the diverse discography of Atrocity. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
