ICED EARTH — Burnt Offerings (review)

There was a fairly sizable gap between the previous Iced Earth album and the release of Burnt Offerings, a time in which the band's major influences (Metallica and Iron Maiden) both entered patchy periods of their careers (from which, arguably, Iron Maiden have recovered from whilst Metallica haven't). Never ones to let fashion dictate their musical direction, Iced Earth continue here in their previous trajectory, marrying harsh thrash riffs to Iron Maiden-inspired vocals, songwriting, and literary influences. I can't say the fusion this time around is absolutely wonderful and compelling, but it's an entertaining enough listen if you miss the late 1980s.
