Iran isn't a country that's exactly known for its death metal - as a matter of fact, Connate Exasperation's debut EP is probably the first death metal release I've ever heard from the country. Crypts of Decay isn't a terribly unique or standout EP, but it's very competent death metal with some surprising ventures into typically untouched territory. This is technically a one-man band with a vocalist as a session member, and with that in mind, it's easy to gain even more respect for Connate Exasperation's mastermind, Sam. Crypts of Decay isn't an outstanding release, but I've certainly enjoyed hearing it over the past week. It's great to hear a high-quality and promising young death metal act out of Iran; I can only imagine the future holding great things for Connate Exasperation.

The music here is old school-sounding death metal with some technical and sometimes jazzy influences. Bands like Death, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, and even Atheist come to mind. There's also an occasional touch of industrial metal due to the programmed drums; the semi-techno-sounding "Bonecrush" especially adds to this. I can't say I particularly like the previously mentioned track, but it's great to hear that the band is interested in "thinking outside of the box", so to speak. My favorite track would have to be the highly technical "Soulcrush", though most of the other tracks are enjoyable. As mentioned, the drums here are programmed, but they generally sound pretty good. Not as good as a breathing human being, but they rarely interfere with my enjoyment. The production is very good for a self-released debut EP, though it does sound a bit amateurish.

Crypts of Decay is a good EP by Connate Exasperation, well-deserving a 3 star rating. A bit more of a unique approach would've really grabbed my attention, but it's still clear that these guys aren't content with being a clone band. Fans of old school death metal that are okay with programmed drums should enjoy this one. I doubt Iran will ever become a country known for its top-notch death metal acts, but if this EP shows anything, it proves that there are bands from that country willing to create some excellent death metal. I'm eager to hear what the future holds for Connate Exasperation.
