Electric Wizard's self-titled debut album is a confident - though not ground-breaking - entry into the doom metal realm which sits somewhere between the modern stoner doom sound of Kyuss and the Sabbath-worshipping retro-doom sound of Saint Vitus. Although later albums such as Come My Fanatics and the incredible Dopethrone would find the band coming into their own, we can already find on this one the pulp fiction obsession, the Sabbath nods, and the pungent smell of weed - in other words, all the essential features of the band's sound, just not yet assembled into an individual and distinctive sound. Though I wouldn't say it's the ideal place to start experiencing the Wizard's magic, it's not the worst place either, and doom fans will probably enjoy it a lot.
