Though it was Dimmu Borgir's commercial breakthrough, Enthrone Darkness Triumphant rings hollow to my ears compared to the two preceding albums. Sure, there's all the usual black metal yelling about Satan, and synthesiser flourishes, but it doesn't succeed at sounding deathly serious, or majestic and grandiose, or supremely cheesy, or in attaining any of the other moods or atmospheres that black metal is known for. In fact, it doesn't really evoke any particular mood at all - it just plain leaves me cold. Fans of synthesiser-enhanced melodic black metal will probably find something to enjoy about it, but personally I struggle to see what.
