Warthur
This side project from Satyr of Satyricon distinguishes itself from the various "dungeon synth"-style projects issued by black metal musicians in imitation of Mortiis' early solo work by the virtue of the presence of a range of other musicians, including Emperor's Ihsahn. Typically, this sort of album tends to feature only a sole performer, but here Satyr is able to invest the proceedings with a little more richness (in particular, some stirring choir sections), and a little more variety than is usual for this odd little subgenre. The upshot is that the blending of lo-fi dark ambient and lush folk music yields a unique mixture here, a blending of electronic and acoustic music traditions that lends the piece a distinctive atmosphere.
