DARKTHRONE — Hate Them (review)

Warthur
With slower, sludgier riffs and an injection of almost punkish attitude (detectable mainly in the lyrics but also at parts of the playing), Darkthrone's Hate Them stays mostly within the territory of traditional black metal - so traditional in fact that the band seem to channel the spirit of classic-era Venom at points. But there are occasional flashes of some other restless musical spirit fighting to get out in Darkthrone's music, with a very very mild pointer or two to the fusion of black metal and crust punk they would pioneer a couple of albums later. A more than welcome exorcism of the problems of Plaguewielder, Hate Them finds Darkthrone invested with a new and vigorous energy.
