I get the impression that Nile are the sort of band who consistently deliver exactly what you expect from them each album - in their case, technical death metal with a brutal edge and lyrics drawing on Egyptology and H.P. Lovecraft. This is fun stuff, but for my part I only really need one album of this sort of stuff. Still, Ithyphallic delivers these goods competently and excitingly, and I can safely say the band have won me over with this album, particularly with the mean Morbid Angel-esque guitar solos they let rip with. Bookended by two epic tracks, I found the shorter middle tracks to run together a little, and they do tend to throw in a few too many interludes based on pastiches of Middle Eastern music to pad out the running time which I could do without.
