After their second album, where they doubled down on their Black Sabbath influences, Blood Ceremony began a process of shifting from a doom metal foundation to their music to a style of heavy psych that more closely fits the Black Widow-y, proto-metal-ish, folk influenced, demonically possessed aesthetic they've been going for since their debut. On Lord of Misrule that process has been completed, and the band has crafted an honest-to-goodness dimensional portal to an alternate 1970s, where they now reside and send albums back to us. Once again, Alia O'Brien's the threefold talent to watch here, with her vocals, organ, and flute really bringing the band's sound together. Even better than its predecessor.

My favourite ones of theirs are their debut, where I think they got the doom metal/heavy psych blend just right, and this one which has been the best of their more heavy psych-rock focused ones (though The Eldritch Dark isn't too far behind on that front).

I like Living With the Ancients and I'm glad they gave a more doom metal-focused spin on their sound a try before shifting in the opposite direction, but there's lots of doom merchants out there and I think it was the right call for them to take the path less travelled.

Indeed a brilliant album. Not to diminish Living with the Ancients in any way as its a brilliant album too but for me my favourite has to come down between this one and The Eldritch Dark. I was sure before hearing this for the first time that they couldn't possible better what they'd already done, but I think they may have indeed managed it. Only time will tell I think. I expect when I finally manage to get the CD in my hands (been streaming thus far) I'll be listening to it and the rest of their stuff a lot again. I'm trying not to order CDs at the moment due to paying off a rather hefty bill for my new PC though, so not sure when I'll get it. I actually walked by my local music shop today with cash on the hip and pretty much said sod it and went in with the intent of buying it so long as they had a copy. They did, but I ended up walking back out again when I saw the price sticker. They wanted the same price for the CD that online stores like Dodax charge for the vinyl.

Love this album and band - whilst I felt their debut was them finding their feet the last 3 have been spot on and hard to choose between as a favourite.
