Thanks to their Satanic lyrical obsessions, Mercyful Fate are often cited as an influence on black metal, but their debut EP (and subsequent career) reveal a band who acted more as a missing link between traditional heavy metal and thrash metal. Coming straight out the gate on this debut with the most gleefully Satanic lyrics this side of Venom (and some really nasty misogyny on Nuns Have No Fun, which I'm not keen on), the band had their prog-influenced sound nailed down at this point, and the classic Melissa and Don't Break the Oath albums would polish it to perfection.

The tracks here are an essential part of the Mercyful Fate story which all fans of their first two albums should seek out. That said, you should be bear in mind that all the songs on the EP are available (in a different sequence) on The Beginning, which is far more widely available, so spending big money on a rare copy of this is only worth it if you really want to get the original EP.
