Saint Vitus are a frustrating band to follow, for me - it seems as though every time they put out an album which really took their sound to the next level (such as their debut, or Born Too Late) they followed it up with an album which saw them resting a bit too much on their laurels, such as Hallow's Victim or, well, this one.

There's nothing particularly wrong with Mourning Cries, except it's all a bit too straightforward and predictable. Of course, you know what you're getting with any Saint Vitus album - sludgy Black Sabbath riffs and a potent smell of weed - but this time around they seem to offer up Vitus-by-numbers, sticking to their usual playbook and not doing anything to surprise the listener or to take the songs to the next level.
