Never Ending Nightmares is the debut full-length album by Swedish death metal act Humanity Delete. The album was released in December 2012. Humanity Delete is a project led by prolific musicians Rogga Johansson whose credits include artists such as The 11th Hour, Bloodgut, Demiurg and Paganizer. While Rogga is the sole member of the band there are guest guitar solos played by Lasse Pyykkö (Hooded Menace) while the lyrics are penned by Jill Girardi.

While predominantly a straight-forward death metal release Never Ending Nightmares also features elements of grindcore and punk. The songs are typically short and to the point, which is the best thing for this particular brand of extreme metal as far as I’m concerned, but they seem to accomplish a lot within the short running times, none of which even hit four minutes. Because of the short times Never Ending Nightmares isn’t a long album despite having twelve tracks, falling short of a full half an hour. Humanity Delete’s music is described in its promotional blurbs as being post-apocalyptic but while the band name and cover art convey that sort of atmosphere well enough it’s not a vibe I get from the actual music; at least there’s nothing that really sets Never Ending Nightmares apart from other death metal to suggest any particular feeling that I’d associate with a post-apocalyptic vibe.

But the important thing will an album like this is that it gets the job done. Rogga Johansson is a very accomplished vocalist and instrumentalist and Never Ending Nightmare is testament to his abilities. His growl is strong and his riffs have a great groove to them that almost pushes some of the music into a death ‘n’ roll sound while there are some nice showcases that it isn’t all about brutality and thrashing away, with the lead guitar in particular adding spice to the music. It’s an experience that is over quickly, but one that once over I do feel inclined to go back to sooner rather than later. While I can’t say that Never Ending Nightmares has the markings of a genre classic about it, this is clearly the work of a man who knows what he’s doing in this field and a great album tier rating is deserved.

82/100
