BUCKETHEAD - PIKE 82 - Calamity Cabin

41st album out of 60 in 2014 and 111th overal

l All sounds brought to you by Buckethead and all instrumental

However this does have some sampled talking

This has only 8 tracks that clock in at 29:50

“Calamity Cabin” (2:43) immediately begins as super heavy grungy thrash metal that is mid paced for the first minute and then picks up speed. It remains crunchy for a while but then jeers into strange alternative chord and time sigs but ends thrashy again

“Walking In Circles” (4:21) is also another super speedy thrash number that follows the same pattern of heavy distorted thrash riffs and then jittery alternative metal meanderings and then back into thrash mode. It’s longer so has more variations of the two parts but basically same type of track

“The Forest Sings” (5:26) is a different bouncy kind of grungy track. Sorta like “Walk” from Pantera but jumps into a faster paced thrashy guitar riff with slow drums. This is some strange hybrid of thrash and alternative metal. More interesting than the first two. Has more variety and changes. But that’s what you’d expected from singing forests, no?

“Downpour” (1:42) is a slower echoey yet distorted arpeggiated guitar riff at first and then bursts into heavy thrash metal and then ends with progressive time sigs

“What A Weird Room” (2:56) is another bouncy thrash number immediately with heavy speed. This one has a weird mix of chords and riffs that leapfrog over each other in bizarre ways. This is a finger and brain workout if there ever was one

“Found In The Tomb” (5:20) starts off with guitar harmonics followed by a thrash riff with odd timings that alternates with little licks and then jumps into a different speedy thrash riff. This one is pretty cool as it mixes up different licks and riffs and juxtaposes them in strange ways

“Hollow Door” (3:06) is another somewhat normal yet slightly off alternative metal track at first but then quickly jumps into thrash. This one is less interesting than the previous tracks. Starting to seem a little by the numbers as it has a very predictable development which repeats

“Beware Of Quicksand” (4:16) jumps right into heavy thrash guitar accompanied by a lazy drumbeat and has periods of staccato chords. The bass, drums and guitars have moments where they all play apart from each other and dance around each other timewise. This one has slower moments of jangly guitar passages as well as changing it up with the riffs. No bad

This one is pretty cool for pretty much being predominantly an instrumental thrash metal album. It has plenty of progressive elements that make it a really fun listen. Not as cool as the previous PIKE but that was unprecedented genius whereas this is just brilliant

Good review, I'm going to have to check this one out. Buckethead's thrash albums seem to usually be pretty great.
