The Best of Both Worlds

Ride The Lightning is second album by metal monsters Metallica, and is the first where the band is truly finding their sound under Hetfield's leadership. Dave Mustaine's songwriting still finds its way into these songs, but unlike Kill Em All, this sounds like a Metallica album with the thunderous palm muting of Hetfield and Ulrich's drumming leading the way. Cliff Burton is still in full force here.

The only vaguely weak song on this album is "Escape" and it's still good. All the rest are just amazing. "Creeping Death," "Fade to Black," and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" are three of Metallica's best songs ever. The clean intro of "Fight Fire with Fire" into the sixteenth riff is just indescribably great. "The Call of Ktulu" is a great instrumental (good enough that Mustaine will recycle it on Rust in Peace).

There really isn't much to say about this album. It's one of the masterpieces of metal, and very few would argue with that statement accept to say another Metallica album is better.
