Warthur
On Silent Waters, Amorphis present a diverse sound ranging from pretty melodic passages to the occasional outburst reminiscent of their death metal roots. Fans of the darker sound of the band's early releases are likely to be dissatisfied, however, because even the eruptions of grunted vocals from Tomi Joutsen seems to be restrained somehow, as though the band aren't really feeling very death metal any more but feel obliged to keep these ingredients in their sound anyway when in some respects the album would be more cohesive if they left their past behind for good. The melodic, progressive side of the band's sound, on the other hand, is quite charming - but again, it'd be more charming if it didn't have those "hey, remember when we were a death metal act?" interruptions.
