The last supper...

Genre: progressive metal

To be honest when I first heard this album, the very fist track "Godagar" gave me a true WTF-moment, as the choir arrangements made me go "This is fucking weird". Now, in my world there are two types of WTF-moment. There is the bad one (which would be my reaction to Baby Metal or Dead By April), and then there is the good one (which is my reaction to something that is weird in a positive way).

My WTF-moment with Teodor Tuff falls into the latter category, because this is a really good album.

The opening track with the semi-operatic choir arrangements is really intense and a really neat way to kick an album like this one off. The music on the album is generally quite melodic and very catchy. It teems with melodic guitar leads and memorable choruses, as well as compelling grooves. This makes the album very accessible and not as weird as the intro would seem to suggest. The music comes across so straightforward that one does not notice all the little progressive details that are scattered throughout the album, such as dynamic song structures and the occasional rhythmical ambiguity. Teodor Tuff also take their music in a more theatrical, or dramatic (does one dare to construct the word "Burtonesque"?), direction every now and then with 'Hymn (for an Embattled Mind)' being a good example of this.

Overall, the album is, with its combination of straight up hard rocking elements and progressive elements, very good, but what really won me over are the harmonic twin lead guitars and the catchy vocal melodies.

In any case, if you like progressive metal that combines accessibility with sophistication and melody, then Teodor Tuff is the band to check out.
