MELVINS — Stoner Witch (review)

Warthur
Melvins shifted gear a little for a more mainstream-friendly stoner rock sound this time, their sludge tendencies sublimated but not entirely suppressed. I don't think it quite hits the heights of Lysol, Bullhead, or Houdini, but it's no slouch next to them, and some of the longer tracks like Shevil would qualify for any Melvins "best of" compilation worthy of the name. It's about as commercially acceptable as the Melvins get, which in the grand scheme of things isn't very commercially acceptable at all, so some may find it a useful gateway drug into their sonic universe, though if you are already a fairly broad-minded and adventurous listener you may find it obscures their more offbeat and distinctive qualities.
