Had Manilla Road never reunited after their split (and had the record company not cheekily added the Manilla Road name to the Circus Maximus album), The Courts of Chaos would have stood as a solid swansong for the group; as it is, it remains a solid and distinctive entry in their discography. Veering away from the more harsh and extreme elements they had dabbled in on some of the preceding albums, the release instead boasts a more nuanced and contemplative sound - it reminded me a little of some of the more ethereal and dreamlike material on Iron Maiden's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (complete with an expanded keyboard presence courtesy of Randy Foxe).
