Having hit their brutal stride on Cause of Death, Obituary took a "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" approach to The End Complete, offering up nine more morbid meditations on the lapse into oblivion and putrescence that awaits us all. At 36 minutes it certainly can't be accused of outlasting its welcome, and to be honest this was probably a smart move - otherwise the lack of significant musical development over Cause of Death might have become an issue. As it stands, to a certain extent The End Complete boils down to "Cause of Death, only with Allen West back in the guitar position", and on balance that's all it really needed to be.

That's a good point. Some grindcore "albums" are less than 20 minutes, but by the end of it, you're feeling quite battered anyway. And Reign in Blood only clocks in at around the half hour mark.

If we're comparing song-for-song, I don't seem much between them - but in terms of a whole-album listening experience, I'd give The End Complete the edge. Not a full half-star edge, but maybe a tenth of a star or something. Yes, it's brief, but the brevity helps - brutal death metal is like hardcore punk, a really short and punchy album that gets it all out there and done in just over half an hour often hits the spot better than an album which goes on for over 40 minutes.

I love this one too, as I do all Obituary albums, but World Demise is probably my favorite.

I enjoy this a bit more than Cause of Death too. In fact I think it´s their best release.

The End Complete is better than Cause of Death. It is clearer and heavier sounding, and the riffs are much sharper. It really isn't a style of music open to a lot of change or development without losing it's original core.
