I honestly wasn't expecting anything listenable to emerge from the Manowar stable this late in the game, but I am very pleased to be proved wrong by The Lord of Steel, which is the best Manowar album we have had for decades. Taking a more unpretentious route than recent releases - perhaps inspired to get back to basics after the Battle Hymns rerecording - the album is a lean collection of Judas Priest-inspired metal which is catchier and more compelling than anything since Sign of the Hammer. El Gringo, in particular, must surely rank as one of the band's best songs. Note, however, that the Hammer Edition and the regular edition have very different mixes - the Hammer Edition is very bass-heavy, and that's the one I reviewed (and I genuinely think the bass-heavy sound works really well).
