With two longstanding members - Scott Columbus and co-founder Ross the Boss - out of the picture, Manowar needed to prove their ongoing viability as a band on The Triumph of Steel. I'm not sure that they do. They seem to want to prove their ability to handle epic, complex material by opening the album with a 28 minute epic (Achilles), but the individual parts range from the mediocre to the downright tedious. (In particular, new drummer Rhino 39 is given a long, boring drum solo right in the middle of the composition which absolutely robs it of what little momentum it had built up.) The remaining tracks are pale imitations of Manowar's past glories. In a word: sad.
