Thrice's hardcore roots were challenged on their 2005 album Vheissu. Critics applauded the album for it's experimental nature and use of foreign styles, such as piano, Japanese folk, chain-gang chanting, among other things. Granted these very interesting music choices would do better if they were put under a brighter spotlight, but the music still stands well separate from the band's prior and subsequent releases. While not extremely complex in the vein of songwriting, it is very refreshing to see a creative effort done here to experiment with different influences and create some great slamming songs. Kensrue's Rise Against-esque vocals do get an honorable mention as well. I'm pretty sure Thrice's album profits go to charity so that's just another reason to pick this one up!
