An exemplary specimen of fully realized Southern Metal, embodying all the influences of the genre strongly. The eclectic nature of this album is its strongest suit, touching upon many different styles yet always within the singular umbrella of Southern Metal and keeping that sludgy, worn-out cowboy aesthetic integral to the genre.

The guitar playing stands out most, and the majority of the songs are entirely led by layered guitarwork, with rhythm and vocals playing second fiddle. There’s a good variety in guitar playing styles as well, with Southern Rock leads, Groove chugs, Heavy Metal riffs and nice acoustic finger plucking for the more somber cowboy numbers.

The huge problem with this album is the mood and actual melodies. The mood of this album can generally be described as “I’m a tough guy, watch out for me” and the melodies to these songs don’t evoke anything at all, they’re just stock riffs. The whole album gives me the sense that I would not enjoy spending time with people who write or enjoy this kind of music. The vocals have a really annoying southern drawl yarl to them as well, only adding insult to injury with the embarrassingly juvenile lyricism. The rhythm section never does anything interesting either, which is a big negative for me.

The tracks that evade those issues are best. “Rust” actually has some atmosphere to it, being a more somber, mostly acoustic track with some electric guitars adding very good underlying harmonies.

I can see it as a fun album with some tasty guitarwork, but it’s painfully shallow.

Heavy metal doesn't get much heavier than this.

Zakk Wylde's always brought thunderous riffs and monstrous grooves wherever he goes, and Stronger Than Death is maybe Wylde and Black Label Society at their most balls out heavy. The majority of the album encases me in a wall of sound with roaring guitars, Wylde's bellowing voice, and Rob Trujillo's bass brings such an immense low end to the whole thing.

Phony Smiles & Fake Hellos, 13 Years of Grief, Counterfeit God, and my personal favorite Ain't Life Grand are all perfect examples of the gargantuan sound that this album brings. There are a couple ballads as with most Black Label albums, and Rust is the best of them. They can play beautiful yet still heavy ballads just as well.

Black Label Society has plenty of great albums, but this is the best of them in my book.

Stronger Than Death, from 2000, is the second full-length studio album by the American Heavy Metal band Black Label Society. Black Label Society were essentially the solo project of Zack Wylde at this stage, and are his third venture away from Ozzy Osbourne, after the piano filled solo album Book Of Shadows and the one-off Southern Rock album with Pride And Glory.

The sound of Stronger Than Death is a fairly heavy and no frills mixture of doomy Classic Heavy Metal and Stoner Rock. This album is one of their most direct and hard hitting affairs, with song after song of the gnarlier, more metallic side of the band. It's a bit less raw and muddy than their debut, and it has shed most of the Southern Rock tinge, but has not yet become just as produced and radio friendly as their most famous works. As with all of the BLS efforts, its packaged in a theme of Biker culture and alcohol consumption.

Its almost difficult to chose highlight from album since its so consistent and free of filler, but my favourite songs include `Phoney Smiles & Fake Hellos,' `Superterrorizer' and `Ain't Life Grand,' although its hard to think of this record without the furiously catchy single `Counterfeit God' (famous for having Mark Walburg playing bass guitar in its music video).

Besides the meaty, low pitched riffs, and the mixture of slow groves with fast paced driving sections, the main focus of any Black Label Society record is the lead guitar. Zack has a very distinctive style. Its full of personality, flash and lots of little flourishes.

You should consider checking out the band if you are a fan of Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Pantera, Down, Clutch or Pepper-era C.O.C.

This early album is one of their heaviest to date. Its got fewer ballads, an edgier production and less tracks exclusively in the mid-tempo range than their later work like Mafia and Shot To Hell.

Overall; Stronger Than Death is probably the band's most direct and no-frills records to date. If you like their debut, this is a must have. It could be argued that it may be repetitive but its my personal favourite of all their albums, the songs are great, everything is tasteful and its got a certain bite to it.
