About this release

The band chose not to include "Cold Lake" in their reissues series of 1999 which means that good copies - vinyl and CD - can be quite expensive, due to their rarity.

The CD version contains two bonus tracks (marked with * in the tracklist).

Thanks to Time Signature, Unitron, Nightfly, Vim Fuego for the updates

Warthur
I have to step in here and agree with Time Signature - whilst Cold Lake is certainly not representative of Celtic Frost's work overall, and is undoubtedly their most commercially accessible and musically mainstream releases, I certainly wouldn't call it a bad album. Whilst you can hear a snatch of glam metal influence here or there, I think calling it an outright glam metal album is a gross exaggeration - though I can understand why you might be tempted to do it coming to this directly from Into the Pandemonium or To Mega Therion.

In fact, the sound is more reminiscent of a head-on collision between the more mainstream-leaning thrash bands of the era and Judas Priest - and the end result is much more appealing than Priest's own Ram It Down from the same period. Is it a brilliant work of inspiring genius? Not in the slightest. Is it a well-performed and entertaining metal album which will get your head banging? Most definitely.

Petty obessions...

Genre: heavy metal / (glam metal)

"Cold Lake" is the album that everybody loves to hate (the band were so ashamed of it that they didn't reissue it, when they reiisued their back catalogue in 1999). It is normally categorized as glam metal, and certainly, the pink cover, and even more so, the photographs of the band members - where they are styled in typical glam metal fashion - would suggest that "Cold Lake" is a run-of-the-mill glam metal release.

However, musically, "Cold Lake" is more of a dark heavy metal release, which even contains a number of thrashy elements. It is not a typically dark and experimental Frost release, but it's NOT Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Poison. Firstly, as mentioned, the music is too dark, and there are more musical references to traditional 80s heavy metal than glam metal. The main riff of "Cherry Orchards" even sounds a bit like like Metallica's "Search and Destroy" while "Little Velvet" reminds me of 80s Judas Priest. Even "Dance Sleazy" and the bonus track "Tease Me" with their glammy title sound more like Motörhead than Crüe or Ratt.

I won't recommend this album to anyone, because everybody hates it. Well, I like it, and fuck you if you hate me for liking it :-P
