One important thing to know about Death Wolf is that they started life in 2000 as Devil’s Whorehouse, who were a Misfits/Samhain covers band until they changed their name in 2011. Oh, and bassist Morgan is also guitarist in Black Metal outfit Marduk. To say that these guys have been influenced by Danzig is something of an understatement – just a shame that singer Maelstrom seems to be a little confused with what he is doing. When he sings normally there is a balance and finesse that is missing from the screams and growls that seem to be a large part of the album. Musically it goes all over the place, but it is when they are doing a gentle early Sabbath such as on the beginning of “Lord of Putrefaction” that they have the most presence.
I found little here that provides excitement, and given their long history and recording career I was somewhat surprised as I expected more. Although it isn’t an awful album there is plenty more that I would rather listen to. www.centurymedia.com
