"Gluey Porch Treatments" is the debut full-length studio album by US sludge metal/hard rock act Melvins. The album was originally released on vinyl through Alchemy Records in 1987. It has since been re-released a couple of times with various additional tracks. The original version feautures 17 tracks and a full playing time of 33:48 minutes while some re-releases feature as much as 29 tracks and a playing time that exceed the hour mark.
The music on the album is a filthy, raw and energetic hard rock/sludge metal with strong hardcore leanings. It´s primal and simple yet effective and catchy. The three-piece lineup with guitar, bass, drums and vocals provides the music with a garage sound. The music features that special raw and tight energy that only a three-piece lineup can create. The music is predominantly based on the ultra heavy guitar riffs and heavy beats, but also the raw vocal delivery by Buzz Osborne. The sound production is raw and more or less sounds like the album was recorded in someone´s garage. The raw "live" energy suits the music well.
It´s interesting to listen to an album like "Gluey Porch Treatments" in retrospect, because while it may sound a bit imature and raw today, it must have been quite the treat back then. It´s a bit different from other releases from that time, and it´s not without reason that Melvins are often called the godfathers of sludge and other similar praises. This is certainly an album ahead of it´s time. a 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is fair.
