After exploring prog, country and folk on their last three albums, Primus return to their metal roots on Antipop.
Antipop is Primus most straight-forward metal release, however it omits many of the experimental, thrash and funk metal elements that made Frizzle Fry and Sailing the Sea of Cheese Alt-metal classics in favour of a different kind of metal; Nu metal. This albums adopts many traits of nu metal, most notably simplistic downtuned, murky guitar playing, similar to that of Korn, Deftones and Slipknot who were all getting a lot of attention at the time, it even has production from Nu metal poster child Fred Durst.
Primus playing this style leads to some interesting results, such as the Durst produced Lacquer Head and Electric Uncle Sam which features Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, these are probably the heaviest song's Primus have ever made. However even the likes of Jim Martin of Faith No More, James "The Table" Hetfield, Tom Waits, Durst, Morello and Matt Stone of South Park can't save half of the song's on this album from being bland, mediocre Nu metal fodder, with song's like The Antipop, Greet the Sacred Cow and Power Mad completely backfiring. Overall an interesting, if not somewhat misguided change in direction by Primus. Recommended for fans of their heavier material.
