UMUR
"Demo 1 '91" is the second demo recording by Finnish death metal act Purtenance Avulsion. The demo was independently released in March 1991 and it was the last recording under the Purtenance Avulsion monicker before the band cut the Avulsion part from their name and continued under the Purtenance monicker. There´s been a lineup change since the 1990 rehearsal demo as Toni Honkala has joined on bass making Purtenance Avulsion a quartet on this demo.
Stylistically this is heavy, brutal, and morbid sounding old school Scandinavian death metal. Purtenance are along with their fellow countrymen in Demigod (and maybe Convulse) some of the prime examples of early 90s Finnish death metal (which weren´t worshipping at the alter of Carcass or incorporated other music styles). Brutal, filthy, and morbid, but still with a great sense for dynamics and even the odd semi-melodic moment to spice things up (not that there´s much melody here, but there´s still the odd gloomy hint here and there).
While the demo certainly is a raw demo recording and no one would mistake it for being anything else, it´s still a great sounding release, featuring a sound production which perfectly suits the darkness and brutality of the material. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
