PURTENANCE Member of Immortal Damnation

"Member of Immortal Damnation" is the debut full-length studio album by Finnish death metal act Purtenance. The album was released through Drowned Productions in 1992. It succeeds the release of the September 1991 "Crown Waits the Immortal" EP. Purtenance formed in 1989 under the Purtenance Avulsion monicker and released a couple of 1990/1991 demos under their original name before cutting the Avulsion part from their band name. "Member of Immortal Damnation" would be Purtenance´s only full-length studio album in their original run as they disbanded shortly after its release. They´ve however reunited in 2012 and have released several EPs and albums since.

While the sound production values are slightly cleaner (but definitely still pretty raw and at times even a bit murky and distorted), "Member of Immortal Damnation" is still a pretty brutal, grim, and gloomy sounding old school death metal release and it´s a natural continuation of the sound found on "Crown Waits the Immortal". Anything else would of course also be odd as two out of the three tracks from the EP were re-recorded and included on "Member of Immortal Damnation" ("A Dark Cloud Arises" and "Crown Waits the Immortal").

There´s something undeniably primal and savage (just shy of being a bit amaturish at times) about the way the music on the album is composed and performed. It features all the gloomy darkness of old school 90s death metal and there is absolutely nothing here which points in any other direction than that. "Member of Immortal Damnation" is one of the best examples of the old school Finnish death metal scene (along with releases from contemporary artists like Abhorrence, Demigod, and Convulse). It´s not the most original release from the scene (artists like Xysma and Demilich took care of that) and it probably wouldn´t be your first guess that it was Purtenance playing if you heard their music by chance, but there´s great authenticity and passion involved here, which to my ears are important factors when evaluating a release like this. Fans of the most primal, raw, and authentic old school Scandinavian death metal should find a lot to appreciate here. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

PURTENANCE Crown Waits the Immortal

"Crown Waits the Immortal" is an EP release by Finnish death metal act Purtenance. The EP was released through Drowned Productions in September 1991. Purtenance formed in 1989 under the Purtenance Avulsion monicker and released a couple of 1990/1991 demos under their original name before cutting the Avulsion part from their band name. "Crown Waits the Immortal" is the first release under the Purtenance monicker. The EP features three tracks and a total playing time of 9:38 minutes. "Apparition of the Mist" is a relatively short instrumental intro track, while both "A Dark Cloud Arises" and "Crown Waits the Immortal" are more regular length death metal tracks featuring growling vocals. The two latter tracks would be re-recorded and included on Purtenance debut full-length studio album "Member of Immortal Damnation" from 1992.

Stylistically the material on "Crown Waits the Immortal" pretty much sums up everything I think of when I think of old school Finnish death metal from the early 90s. It´s simply an archetypical release from that time. Raw and murky sound production values, a brutal, gloomy, and morbid sounding death metal style, and brutal cavernous growling vocals. Tempos which vary between fast, mid-paced, and doomy. This is as organic and authentic old school as it gets...

...Purtenance aren´t the most original sounding death metal band from Finland, but they do what they do with great passion and conviction, and fans of the old school Finnish death metal sound (contemporary artists like Abhorrence, Demigod, and Convulse) should find a lot to appreciate here. A 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is warranted.

PURTENANCE Demo 1 '91

"Demo 1 '91" is the second demo recording by Finnish death metal act Purtenance Avulsion. The demo was independently released in March 1991 and it was the last recording under the Purtenance Avulsion monicker before the band cut the Avulsion part from their name and continued under the Purtenance monicker. There´s been a lineup change since the 1990 rehearsal demo as Toni Honkala has joined on bass making Purtenance Avulsion a quartet on this demo.

Stylistically this is heavy, brutal, and morbid sounding old school Scandinavian death metal. Purtenance are along with their fellow countrymen in Demigod (and maybe Convulse) some of the prime examples of early 90s Finnish death metal (which weren´t worshipping at the alter of Carcass or incorporated other music styles). Brutal, filthy, and morbid, but still with a great sense for dynamics and even the odd semi-melodic moment to spice things up (not that there´s much melody here, but there´s still the odd gloomy hint here and there).

While the demo certainly is a raw demo recording and no one would mistake it for being anything else, it´s still a great sounding release, featuring a sound production which perfectly suits the darkness and brutality of the material. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

PURTENANCE Rehearsal '90

UMUR
"Rehearsal '90" is the first demo recording by Finnish death metal act Purtenance Avulsion. The demo was independently released in 1990, but it´s not a demo which was widely distributed and it´s the band´s next demo which most people are probably familiar with (which was the final demo under the Purtenance Avulsion name before the band ditched the Avulsion part of the name). This rehearsal demo features very rough sounding rehearsal recordings of three tracks which would also be featured on the 1991 Purtenance Avulsion demo: "Cannibal Souls", "Cadaveric Mutilation", and "Necropsy of Festering Body". The demo was only made in very few copies and distributed to friends of the band. A 2 star (40%) rating is warranted.
