Metalhead was released in 1999. This album sounds more complex and neat than their previous effort, Unleash The Beast. Most probably because Metalhead was recorded and produced by Charlie Bauerfiend. This album is somewhat darker than their previous effort. The first two tracks “Metalhead” and “Are We Travellers In Time” are pretty much showing their darker elements, while “Conquistador” is surprisingly a fast track very much similar to Unleash The Beast era. But I guess that stays as far as that as the next track “What Goes Around” returns to their darker elements and thick guitar sound.
It is interesting to note as well that mostof the songs here are mid-tempo tracks. Songs like “Song of Evil”, “Prisoner”, “Piss Off”, “Are We Travelers In Time”, and “Sea of Life”. They are also somewhat darker songs, musically. Guess two notable fast tracks are “All Guns Blazing” and “Watching You”. On the other hand, in the hands of producer Charlie Bauerfiend, this album has plenty of radio-friendly tracks. “Are We Travelers In Time”, “Songs of Evil”, or “Prisoner” are to name a few. Also the beautiful track “Sea of Life” are worth listening to, along with its beautiful lyrics “...we can walk the road together/can you take me by the hand/maybe we can find your promised land/...could this be a twist of fate/your written destiny/or could the angel simply pass you by...”. I have to admit that singer Biff Byford has written some of the best lyrics in this album.
This is not a perfect album but I honestly would dare to say that I found so few weakness in this album. A good and neat production quality, plus the additional of new drummer Fritz Randow probably had injected much of fresh blood to this album, with regards to the efforts put in by singer Biff Byford, duo-guitarists Paul Quinn and Doug Scarrat, and bassist Nibbs Carter. Also interesting to note as well that all keyboards on this record was performed by Freedom Call’s singer, Chris Bay.
