BLACK 'N BLUE picture
Black 'N Blue was an American glam metal, hard rock band. The band formed in 1981 out of Portland, Oregon and were originally known as Movie Star. They moved to Los Angeles in 1982, and that same year made their first recorded appearance on Metal Massacre — an independent compilation album that also introduced newcomers Metallica, Ratt, and Malice. In 1984, they released their self-titled debut album on Geffen Records. This album included what is perhaps their best known hit to date, "Hold On to 18," and the album became a moderate success. A follow-up album, entitled Without Love was released the following year. This album saw the band modify their original rougher, hard-edge sound in favor of a more polished, radio-friendly pop-metal approach, a move that alienated many fans. Although the tracks "Without Love" and "Miss Mystery" were both released as singles, neither of them saw chart success, and read more...

BLACK 'N BLUE Nasty Nasty

After a promising debut and the slightly disappointing Without Love, Black ‘N Blue struck gold on their third album Nasty Nasty.

It contains all the hallmarks of their first two albums, the commercial metal riffs, their ear for a good tune alongside a good band performance yet here they up their game with a record full of their best riffs and hooks so far. Nasty Nasty also reduces the pop influences evident on Without Love in favour of a harder edged approach. There’s still the occasional pop/rock moment like Does She Or Doesn’t She but it has such an infectious hook you can’t fail to be taken in by it. It’s the harder metal moments though where they really hit their stride like Kiss Of Death, the title track Nasty Nasty and 12 O’ Clock High. Despite their harder edge they don’t lose sight of a good melody and are instantly infectious.

Overall Nasty Nasty is the bands best album and the best place to start for newbies. However don’t ignore the follow up In Heat, almost as good and it turned out to be their last studio album to date, though a new album has been in the pipeline for a few years now. Hopefully it may surface one day soon.

After the excellent Nasty Nasty Black ‘N Blue were on a roll, returning two years later in 1988 with the almost as good In Heat.

On In Heat they went for an overall smoother sound with a more commercial edge though without taking it as far as the more pop inflected Without Love which it has to be said was a step too far. There’s still plenty of great metal riffs though, most of the tracks taking a mid pace tempo but best of all is the more frantic Great Guns Of Fire which comes across with a riff like High N Dry era Def Leppard, a song that may just be their finest moment ever with a killer riff and hook and a guitar solo to match.

There’s the occasional weaker moment like the more pop orientated Suspicious making the album as a whole less consistent than Nasty Nasty but when it’s at its best In Heat can almost stand head and shoulders with that great album.

After a promising debut in 1984, an album at the heavier end of the glam rock spectrum, Black ‘N Blue returned the following year with Without Love. While still containing some strong material it ultimately remains a bit disappointing.

It’s clear that they had an eye on more commercial success as the music has a more lightweight feel. Gone is the more up tempo metal of the likes of Autoblast present on their debut, in its place are the more radio friendly hooks of Bombastic Plastic and the title track Without Love. It’s certainly better when in heavier territory like We Got The Fire and Swing Time which while still easily accessible benefits from the harder edge. Rockin’ On Heaven’s Door makes a decent anthemic opener but best of all is Stop The Lightning with a heavier darker sounding riff, at least until the verse treads more typical glam ground.

While not a total disaster by any means, Without Love remains the weakest of their four studio albums because of its step too far into more commercial realms, which though admittedly present on their debut were diluted, or should I say toughened up by some harder riffs and a few up tempo songs.

I remember Black ‘N Blue as one of the better bands of the eighties glam metal scene, their albums Nasty Nasty and In Heat being my two favourites. Unfortunately they never really had the success achieved by many of their peers ultimately leading to their split in the late eighties.

While better was to come this 1984 debut was a promising start for the band. Despite their glam rock leanings Black ‘N Blue had a harder edge than the lightweight fluff pedalled by the likes of many glam rockers such as Poison for example. The songs range from the anthemic The Strong Will Rock to the driving up tempo metal of Autoblast and I’m The King. There’s a decent cover of Action, a song originally a hit for UK seventies glam rockers The Sweet. Best of all though is the catchy and memorable Hold On To 18. The band are all good players and in vocalist Jaime St James they have a charismatic frontman.

The band has reformed a number of times over the years and are a going concern at the moment, but without guitarist Tommy Thayer who’s now a member of Kiss. Overall a promising start then but if you’re new to the band go and check out Nasty Nasty first.
