CATTLE PRESS Hordes To Abolish The Divine

"Hordes To Abolish The Divine" is the debut full-length studio album by US, New York based sludge/hardcore act Cattle Press. The album was released through Hydra Head Records in February 2000. "Hordes To Abolish The Divine" turned out to be Cattle Press sole studio album in their original run as they disbanded in 2001 without releasing anything further. Before releasing "Hordes To Abolish The Divine" they released a demo, an EP, and a couple of splits with Sloth and Agoraphobic Nooebleed.

Cattle Press started out playing an ultra heavy and filthy sludge/hardcore style but they´ve cut quite a few of the sludge metal elements from their sound on this album. It´s still crushingly heavy and aggressive hardcore with sludge metal leanings, but this is more post-hardcore than sludge. "Hordes To Abolish The Divine" is quite the interesting and also pretty experimental hardcore release and I´m sometimes reminded of the caustic aggression and heaviness of Breach. A newer band like Code Orange have probably listened to this album as inspiration.

Featuring 13 tracks and a total playing time of 52:53 one could have feared that the album was too long for its own good as this type of music is often not varied enough for such long album lengths, but nothing could be further from the truth, as "Hordes To Abolish The Divine" is a nicely varied release. The vocals range from aggressive raw hardcore shouting to deeper almost death metal growling vocals, and the band change pace often, and all tracks feature intriguing and in some cases even unique songwriting ideas (the use of samples work very well too), making this an entertaining and interesting listen all the way through the playing time. And I haven´t even mentioned the suffocating, grim, and claustrophobic atmosphere Cattle Press create...it´s the sound of the apocalypse (or maybe the soundtrack to a post-nuclear war world).

The album features a heavy, brutal, and raw sounding production, which is the perfect sound for the material featured on the album. So Cattle Press have taken quite a few development steps since their minor release days, and "Hordes To Abolish The Divine" is a high quality release from them. A 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating is deserved.

CATTLE PRESS Directions In Music By Cattle Press / Agoraphobic Nosebleed

UMUR
"Directions In Music" / Agoraphobic Nosebleed" is a split release between US New York sludge/hardcore act Cattle Press and US, Massachusetts based grindcore act Agoraphobic Nosebleed. The split was released through Bovine Records in 1997. It features around 15 minutes of music from both artists, and features 24 tracks and a total playing time of 31:17 minutes.

The 6 Cattle Press tracks are aggressive and heavy sludge/hardcore and often sounds like the most savage and raw Eyehategod releases (minus the stoner metal element). It´s pretty far removed from the heavy and brutal post-hardcore sound Cattle Press would play on their 2000 debut full-length studio album "Hordes to Abolish the Divine" only a few years down the line, but it´s consistent in style with the other minor releases from Cattle Press during their early years.

The 18 Agoraphobic Nosebleed tracks are high velocity, noisy, and aggressive grindcore. It´s like being put through a grinder. It´s such an intense and chaotic listening experience that it´s impossible not to have some sort of reaction listening to it. Personally I think they´ve released much better material, but this is still decent grindcore featuring drum programming.

30 minutes of music is quite a lot for a split release, and if that shouldn´t be a selling point in itself (which it of course shouldn´t if the music was shit...), especially the Cattle Press part of the split is worth the price of admission. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.

CATTLE PRESS Cattlepress / Sloth

UMUR
"Cattlepress / Sloth" is a split release between US, New York based sludge/hardcore act Cattle Press and US, Ohio based sludge/hardcore act Sloth. The split was independently released in 1997.

Cattle Press opens the split with the 9:25 minutes long instrumental and experimental noise/sludge metal track "So That Threads Remain of What Will Be First Movement:Deeper Than the Sea of Ruin". It sounds like an unfinished demo and it´s not a particularly interesting track. Sloth follow with three tracks. The Sloth tracks also features what sounds like a demo quality sound production, and they are extremely raw and heavy. It´s repetitive, experimental, and chaotic sounding. The last track "A Serenade" is basically an a cappella cover of a Danzig song. So upon conclusion this is an odd and not particularly good quality release and a 2 - 2.5 star (45%) rating is fair.

CATTLE PRESS Showered In The Love Of The Abhorer

UMUR
"Showered In The Love Of The Abhorer" is an EP release by US, New York based sludge/hardcore act Cattle Press. The EP was released through Devastating Soundworks in 1995. It follows the release of the 1995 "Slaves To The Rhythm Of Dismemberment" demo and since the demo Cattle Press have added a human drummer to their lineup.

Stylistically they have also changed their style a bit towards an aggressive sludgy hardcore style which isn´t far removed from the most savage and angry moments found on some of the early Eyehategod albums minus the stoner metal element. It´s loud, it´s grim, and it´s distorted and noisy. Although Cattle Press predominantly play mid-paced and heavy riffs and rhythms they occasionally speed things up and play much faster.

"Showered In The Love Of The Abhorer" features an unpolished and raw sounding production job, which suits the rawness of the music well, and upon conclusion it´s a good quality release from Cattle Press further enhancing the feeling the preceding demo gave that this is a band who have a lot going for them. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.

CATTLE PRESS Slaves To The Rhythm Of Dismemberment

UMUR
"Slaves To The Rhythm Of Dismemberment" is the first demo recording by US, New York based sludge/hardcore act Cattle Press. The demo was independently released in 1995. "Slaves To The Rhythm Of Dismemberment" stands out in Cattle Press´s discography as it´s the only recording using drum programming instead of a human drummer.

The drum programming works really well though and it´s not a distraction from the crushing heaviness and darkness of the demo. Cattle Press play a brutal, sludgdy, and heavy type of hardcore with sparse aggressiv shouting vocals. But the music is predominantly instrumental. The hypnotic repetive nature of many of the songs could have been tedious but it´s actually a strenght of the music, as those elements enchance the claustrophic and gloomy atmosphere of the music.

The demo features a raw but well sounding production, which suits the material well, and upon conclusion "Slaves To The Rhythm Of Dismemberment" is an interesting first release from Cattle Press. They would evolve and change their music on future releases, but they did something good on this first demo. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
