In 1992, XL was put together by Mikey (vocals/bass) and Chris Jones (guitars) – the XL songs were of the time, Def Leppard meets Poison and Alice Cooper. The Jones boys chose 6 songs from their XL project and headed to Los Angeles for three weeks with a view to get signed. However, just around corner, the ‘grunge’era was rearing its head and the glam-rock, pretty boy bands were about to be replaced by Nirvana and Pearl Jam - and so the party ended for XL. However, the 6-Tracks EP, ‘Rock All Over You’ became a cult classic and the limited edition CD (only 500 copies pressed) was one of the most sought after ‘Def Leppard-sound-a-like’ recordings of the past 20 years – it was selling for £150.00 on eBay at one point! But little has anyone realised that there were more than a dozen fist-raising XL songs recorded in read more...

Brothers Chris and Mikey Jones have played together in various incarnations since the early 80’s, when they were still at school. Chris took up lead guitar and Mikey the bass and vocals. They created Kick in 1998 when they joined forces with singer Nick Workman (now with Vega) and between then and 2004 they released three well-received albums. Nothing has been heard from Kick since then, but that is about to change with ‘Memoirs’, which was originally planned to be a solo album from Mikey. He and Chris decided to release it under the Kick name, even though Nick was too busy to get involved and instead Mikey provided all the vocals The result is an album that makes one think that the last 25 year s or just haven’t taken place as what we have here is a melodic hard rock album that belongs firmly in the mid-Eighties. Heavily influenced by classic Leppard, with touches of bands like Dokken, this is an eighties bad hair day all over again.

Mind you, there will be some that say that this should have stayed there as while here is nothing inherently awful about this, there is nothing wonderful about it either. It is one of those albums that while it is playing it brings a smile to the face of the listener, but as soon as it is finished it is instantly forgotten and there is little that makes one to put it on again. It is never anything more than okay at best, but it will be interesting to see if this gets the complete band going again and hitting the road. www.kickuk.com and www.escape-music.com

KICK Sweet Lick of Fire

It's quite rare to find a good melodic rock album in the new millennium but Kick provided something fresh with their second output, 'Sweet Lick of Fire'. Still carrying the modern nuance but not heavily contaminated and I can hear the basic root of classic AOR in most of the songs here. Nick Workman is a splendid singer and honestly I recognized his talent only through Vega's last year record, 'Kiss of Life'.

The strength of this album lies on at least 6 superior tracks that scattered from the first half to the second. 'Inhibition', 'Born Again', and 'Praying For The Day' are three fave tracks here and all of them are energetic, fast-paced, and lively. On the contrary, the weakness of this album is obvious by the lack of uptempo tracks beside those three, because if Kick concentrated more on heavier songs, I can think this album will be much more interesting.

It's not like they can't make a good ballads or midtempo, in fact, songs like 'Time' or 'Where I Belong' are sensational in their own way. Check out 'Behind Close Doors' with its superb chorus or 'Painless' which will haunt you like crazy with its nice harmonies and neat composition. I was forgetting some fillers like the title track, 'So Help Me God', or 'The Greatest Show On Earth' earlier, but after coming back for more spins, I don't think it's too bad at all.

The production is great but somehow the sound is too machine-d at times, maybe that's the effect of applying the modern structure within the body of most songs. And they could have reduced the amount of ballads and pushed couple of them to the next album to avoid losing momentum with slower tempo tracks.

I also need to underline again that Nick is such a gifted singer, his vocal is obviously the most standout highlight of this album, and it works fine for him in Vega too. Good album overall and I rated it around 75%, yes it ain't a super awesome and consistent release, but this kind of album is my thing and love to bought it for quite a cheap price sometimes ago.
