MASSACRA picture
Massacra was a French death/thrash metal band formed in 1986 in Paris. Even if well received abroad, Massacra was ignored by most of the French metal press and promoters. After years of feud with Loudblast, at that time the most successful French death/thrash band in their own country, the two bands did a common tour in France in the end of 1995. They split up as Fred Duval died of skin cancer on 6 June 1997.

Massacra are considered underrated compared to other death metal legends in the same league. Final Holocaust is considered to be one of the finest death/thrash album ever.

Jean-marc Tristani and Fred Duval released an indus/thrash-metal album in 1996 under the name Zero Tolerance. Tristani later became the Century Media representative in France.

"Nearer from Death" is the third demo recording by French death/thrash metal act Massacra. The demo was independently released in January 1989. It´s the successor to the February 1988 "Final Holocaust" demo. There has been one lineup change since the preceding demo as guitarist/vocalist Frederick Laurent Duval has joined Massacra, making the band a quartet on "Nearer from Death". Duval was a founding member of Massacra and played drums on the July 1987 "Legion of Torture" demo, but was out of the band while Massacra recorded the "Final Holocaust" demo. Massacra formed in 1986 and released three demos before being signed for the release of their debut full-length studio album "Final Holocaust" (March 1990, Shark Records).

Stylistically Massacra continue playing the brutal and ultra aggressive thrash metal style of the preceding demos but with even more nods towards death metal. This was a time when many artists were in a transition phase from being thrash metal acts to playing full-on death metal, or in some cases perform a death/thrash metal hybrid style, which is subsequently more or less the direction Massacra went in. The three tracks on the 17:05 minutes long demo are all extremely aggressive and fast-paced death/thrash metal deliverd by a tight playing band and featuring some very raw snarling/screaming vocals. The screaming chromatic guitar solos provide the music with a nice chaotic touch.

The sound production is the least raw and most clear sounding Massacra had up until then, but personally I appreciate the more raw and savage sounding production on the preceding demo to this one. Upon conclusion "Nearer from Death" is another good quality demo recording from Massacra and it finally got them signed to Shark Records for the release of their debut album. The band had hoped to be picked up by one of the bigger American or English labels, but as that didn´t materialize they signed with the smaller Shark Records. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.

"Final Holocaust" is the second demo recording by French death/thrash metal act Massacra. The demo was independently released in February 1988. It´s the successor to the July 1987 "Legion of Torture" demo. There has been one lineup change since the first demo as drummer/vocalist Frederick Laurent Duval has been replaced by Chris Palengat. Massacra formed in 1986 and released three demos before being signed for the release of their debut full-length studio album "Final Holocaust" (March 1990, Shark Records).

Stylistically the material on the 6 tracks, 16:58 minutes long demo continues in a similar death/thrash metal style as the material on the "Legion of Torture" demo. Energetic, ultra aggressive, and brutal thrash metal sometimes bordering death metal. Lead vocalist/bassist Pascal Junet has a raw caustic delivery and a snarling/screaming vocal style which perfectly suits the aggression of music.

The sound quality is slightly better than on the raw debut demo, but still a pretty savage listen. The raw sound production values fits well with the equally raw and and brutal music. Upon conclusion Massacra have produced another good quality thrash metal demo which can be considered a proto-death metal release because of the occasionally more death metal tinged sections. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.

MASSACRA Legion of Torture

"Legion of Torture" is the first demo recording by French death/thrash metal act Massacra. The demo was independently released in July 1987. Massacra formed in 1986 and released three demos before being signed for the release of their debut full-length studio album "Final Holocaust" (March 1990, Shark Records).

Stylistically Massacra play a very raw and brutal type of thrash metal which borders death metal, but considering the time of release, it´s not strange that the most extreme thrash metal releases from those days often feature elements which a few years down the line would be used by death metal artists. The riffs are crude, brutal, and raw thrash metal styled riffs and the same can be said about the drumming. The vocals are raw snarling/screaming rabid dog type vocals, and all 5 tracks on the 18:16 minutes long demo features this style with very few variations found during the playing time. This is very much in your face ripping brutal thrash metal (combine early Kreator with Possessed and you´re halfway there).

The sound production is raw and savage sounding, but perfect for this type of music, and considering the time of release, it´s certainly a decent quality demo production. All the raw energy and caustic aggression of the music is channelled perfected through these production values. Upon conclusion Massacra weren´t unique at what they were doing, as quite a few other contemporary artists played a similar style, but they deliver their music with the right amount of conviction and passion, and their songwriting is pretty decent and effectful too. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.

Founded in Paris in 1986, these guys released a series of demo recordings before putting out their debut album in 1990, and this is the first collection featuring the remastered “Nearer From Death” (1989), “Final Holocaust” (1988) and “Legion Of Torture” (1987). Here was a band that really did epitomise the DIY ethic of the time and even managed to arrange their own European and North American tours without label support. They were raw, unpolished, in your face, and full of passion, and all of that is easy to hear on this collection. It is aggressive and in your face and the only thing that lets down is the quality of the production, but those who are going to be purchasing this are going to be glad that these tapes have now been made available, no matter how raw they now seem so many years after being recorded.

Century Media have worked with the band’s former guitarist Jean-Marc Tristani and the CD version features a large booklet with tons of rare photos, picture comments and detailed interview by guitarist Jean-Marc It also includes French version of the interview for the band's national fans! Fittingly this has also been released on vinyl, and if you are interested in one of these then visit www.CMDistro.com. Get past the 20+ year old independent production, and you will find here something that is brutal that will definitely be of interest to fans of early Sepultura and Kreator.
