MORFEUS picture
Morfeus were initially a doom metal band formed in 1992 in Odense, Denmark, under the name The Unholy Grave, which they changed to Moribound and then to Morfeus. As the years went by, they changed their style to melodic death metal. Eventually, several line-up changes resulted in there being no original members left, and in 2003, they changed their name to Mindmare.

Fueling the flames of metal...

Genre: melodic death metal

The last release under the band moniker Morfeus, "Fueling the Flames of Hate" contains rerecorded versions of "Thorned Harlequin" and "Heaven Bleeds" in addition to a new track "Fueling the Flames of Hate".

Ther is a world of difference between this release and the "Thorned Harlequin" demo, even though two of the songs are the same. They just work much better with the new production and a different vocalist and a new guitarist as well. The new track "Fueling the Flames of Hate" falls smack in the same genre of melodeath as the two other tracks and is equally catchy yet aggressive.

This is a very good demo release, indeed, and it's a mystery to me that the band didn't get signed on the basis of that demo given the quality of the music and the fact that melodeath was really popular back then (well, it still is). Recommended to fans of melodic death metal.

Metalled Harlequin...

Genre: melodic death metal

There had been a lot of changes in the world of Morfeus since their preceding release, the demo-tape "Where No Dreams Reach". Their first demo tape was a doom metal release, and at that time Morfeus were one of the few doom metal acts in Denmark. With "Thorned Harlequin", the style is completely different - very much owing to line-up changes - and falls under the rubric of melodic death metal along the lines of At The Gates, early In Flames, Arch Enemy and "Heartwork"-era Carcass.

The Two first tracks on this release are very catchy and very well written with a lot of thrashy parts and even some references to traditional heavy metal, and they are, of course, also very melodic (following minor scale patterns). The last track is a bit weaker and not too memorable.

The production is not too polished, but not too dirty either. I think that the vocals are a bit too shrill; they are obviously inspired by the vocal style used in At The Gates, but they just do not have the same quality to them.

Anyway, this demo is a fine piece of melodeath, and, in my opinion, the band were already signingworthy back then. Recommendable to fans of melodic death metal.

Salvation lost...

Genre: doom metal

This release is a three-track demo from local Odensean underground doom metal act, Morfeus - and their only release from their doom metal period.

The sound is, of course, quite raw and unpolished, this being a demo tape recorded in 1992. Musically, the band are inspired by the likes of Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, and, while simpler than both, Morfeus' style has the same oppressive atmosphere on the three tracks on this demo. In keeping with doom metal tradition, the music is slow and heavy. They make use of some atmospheric background keyboards on all tracks without overusing it, which I like. Also, the guitar solos are mostly blues based, which, as it happens, actually suits the music quite well.

One of the downsides to this release are the sort-of-growled vocals, which sound too much like a Danish guy shouting in English for my taste.

This is a rarity, and probably impossible to come by, if you didn't buys it from the bands back in the day. It is possible that you can buy it on e-bay though. It certainly is a treat for doom loving demo-collectors.
