Root is a Czech black metal legend from city of Brno founded in 1987 by Big Boss and Blackie. Root was one of the original pre-second-wave black metal bands, following in the footsteps of Bathory and Venom, while taking the genre in a more refined, less savage direction. Their style has since progressed towards a more epic, dark heavy metal sound with a clean-sung vocal approach, but their music can still be recognized as black metal at its core due to the unchanged ideology of the band. After the album Madness of the Graves (2003), Blackie left Root to concentrate on his band Cales. Blackie also plays in the band Entrails, a melodic black metal band.

This release marks 25 years since this Czech band started, and while the original audio disc (and LP version) features the full show recorded at Melodka Music Club (Brno, Czech Republic) on 19th November 2011, the digipack additionally comes with a bonus DVD that includes road documentaries full of backstage and exclusive material as well as live songs filmed at Hammer Open Air (Lieto, Finland 2012), Noctis Fest (Calgary, Canada 2010), Brutal Assault Festival (Josefov, Czech Republic 2007+2012), No Mercy European Tour 2007 and several other shows. Root are one of the pioneers of black/dark metal in Eastern Europe, releasing material and unceasingly touring since they started back in 1987. Singer Jiří 'BigBoss' Valter is renowned as one of the best in the business, and has appeared as a special guest on records by Moonspell, Behemoth and Helheim among others.

What makes this album stand out is firstly BigBoss, who can provide the gruff vocals, or sing in a controlled baritone, or even go falsetto, whatever the music requires, but these guys are much more than just the singer. This is a BM band that emphasises the latter while paying more than just homage to the former, so that there is much more than just a wall of sound and emotion. The guitars link well together, while the bass and drums are having a blast, and there is much more space and room to hear everything that one might expect. I also love the fact that BigBoss is having a laugh and a joke with the audience – the subject matter may be dark, but that is no reason not to enjoy themselves and have some fun. This is one of the finest live BM albums I have come across, with musical twists and turns. While always dark and also containing some doom, there is a passion, lightness and togetherness that makes this a delight from start to end. www.agoniarecords.com

Genre: dark / black metal

Root's music is as strange as their name is. It is not strange in the sense that it is weird or avant-garde or challenging or anything like that. It is strange, because it is unusual compared to most other black metal around these days.

It seems that Root's inspiration goes back beyond the Norwegian-based wave of black metal, the offspring of which dominates most of the modal black metal scene in one way or another, to very early tracks like Venom and Hellhammer. Thus, rather than only blastbeats, harsh vocals and tremolo picking, you can expect more defined riffage, hardcore punk influences, doomy grooves and even hard rock riffage.

Thus, a track like 'In Nomine Satanas' is ladden with doomy riffage, while 'Legacy of the Ancestors' combines thrash metal and hardcore punk and 'Revenge of Hell' is centerd around a groovy sludgy riff. It is only in the fourth track that the black metal stock elements that are tremeolo picking and blastbeating pop up, and, still, they are joined by thrash metal riffage and heavier breakdowns. While black metal elements do pop up now and then throughout the rest of the album (as in 'Son of Satan'), Root draw just as much on other types of heavy metal music, which works extremely well, while doomy and sludgy riffage is not uncommon either (as in 'His Coming').

Production-wise, the album is characterized by the typical cold black metal sound, except the bass is quite dominant, almost having a booming Black Sabbath-quality to it. Also, rather than opting for dirty raw black metal lo-fi production, Root have gone with a, not polished, but still quite well-defined and crisp sounding production.

So, Root's music is really not strange, it is just not one-tracked, and the band is not afraid to reach out beyond black metal, generating a massively appealing and hard rocking species of dark metal which is multifaceted and varied and, most importantly, expressive.
