THE STORM picture
The Storm is an American rock group, formed in the Bay Area of San Francisco during the early 1990s. The band is best known for their first single, the power ballad "I've Got a Lot to Learn About Love", which peaked at #6 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and at #26 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The band featured three of Journey's former members (two of whom were founding members) - Gregg Rolie as keyboardist, Ross Valory on bass, and Steve Smith on drums. Kevin Chalfant, who had a #12 rock chart hit in 1982 as lead vocalist with AOR band 707, was lead vocalist (Rolie also shared lead vocalist duties), and Josh Ramos (who cited Journey founder and guitarist Neal Schon as a major influence) was lead guitarist.

'Eye of The Storm' is the second record by the sensational AOR act led by Kevin Chalfant and Gregg Rolie which I rated slightly higher than their stellar debut. I first knew this band from an old slow rock compilation featuring "Show Me The Way" from the first album and when I got the opportunity to listen to their albums entirely, I was instantly hooked to their harmonic dual vocals in the vein of the great 80s AOR era.

"Don't Give Up" or "Love Isn't Easy" are great examples of slicky beautiful melodic rock while "To Have and To Hold" is a sentimental sweet ballad which can be a perfect wedding song. If you're into bands such as Journey, Foreigner, or Survivor, this is a perfect pick, a classic mind-blowing and unsurpassable album, and after these 15 years, this remained at the top shelf of my favourite AOR albums of all time.

One can simply called THE STORM as a JOURNEY spin-off because 3 out of 5 members were actually from that band, and the other lead singer, Kevin Chalfant, also has similar pipes with Steve Perry and he even released a JOURNEY tribute album, ‘Fly 2 Freedom’ sometimes in 2007. This debut which came out in 1991, though successfully spawning several hits, was considered a flop since grunge has started to take over the scene.

This project was clearly intended for JOURNEY and casual hard rock fans since the band is in hiatus and songs like ‘I’ve Got A Lot To Learn About Love’, ‘Show Me The Way’, or ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’ were definitely thirst-quencher. There are a few passable fillers like ‘In The Raw’ or ‘Touch and Go’, but most of the songs are hits-potential and many cited this album as one of the best AOR albums ever came out in the early 90s. I agree that this is a strong album, I still like it today, but the second album, ‘Eye of The Storm’, which was their last, is IMHO even bigger than this. Both albums were highly recommended especially if you like JOURNEY, FOREIGNER, and other typical American AOR.
