Necrotica While many bands have been jumping off the deathcore wagon to gravitate toward more solid extreme metal music (Job for a Cowboy, Carnifex), many others still maintain their diligence in trying to please the (largely teenage) fanbase they've developed over the few years they've been around. Despite the hatred the genre usually garners from a large percent of the metal community, there really are some great bands lying underneath the crap. Not all bands adhere to the foundations set by bands such as Suicide Silence, and certain bands can display a real wealth of stylistically diverse moments. However, when it comes to the worst of the worst, what band do you turn to? Emmure? Design the Skyline? Nah, they won't do. For the real tasteless atrocity, look at Waking the Cadaver's first album Perverse Recollections of a Necromangler.

Aside from being yet another band trying to cash in on deathcore, Waking the Cadaver try to dub it "brutal deathcore" and add deathgrind elements to their sound. This is topped off with some of the worst lyrics in death metal history; the band try the Cannibal Corpse route with themes of rape and graphic violence, but it comes off as even more childish... especially once terms such as "anal freak" and "hoes" pop up. It would be fine and dandy to get a good laugh out of these lyrics when the singer belts them out, but you can't hear a damn word he's saying! About 90-95% of his vocals consist of ridiculous inhaled growls that guarantee aural torture to the listener, and he simply doesn't let up with this style. But vocals are one thing; is the music any good? Nope. The entire album is a collection of completely forgettable deathcore/deathgrind songs that only exist to waste the listener's time. At twenty-six minutes, the album is mercifully brief; even then, the record still feels like double that length. The production of the record ensures a muddled sound to the instruments, while the formula of every song is nearly identical here. The formula: Blastbeat-laden riff, "REE REE" pig vocals and other inhaled grunts, usually about 4-5 breakdowns a song (long and tedious breakdowns at that), blastbeats; rinse and repeat. There's nothing on offer to make you remember any song after it's over, and no member stands out (other than the vocalist and his awful growls). Nothing is really going on when it comes to compositional variety; the development of each motif is very... well, undeveloped.

So why didn't I mention even one song? Simple: because all the songs blend into each other to the point that none of them deserve to exist. Between the ridiculous vocals, tedious song structures, complete lack of musical variety, and bland musicianship, there's absolutely nothing to like about this. Just thinking about it now is painful, and the fact that an abundance of people actually paid perfectly good money to buy this is absolutely soul-crushing. You deserve better than to listen to such a pile of shit. Perverse Recollections of a Necromangler, I dub thee the Holocaust of heavy metal music.

Doomster I have officially just wasted 26:30 of my life.

I'm pretty sure every unfortunate metalhead has heard the infamous "Chased Through The Woods By A Rapist", via YouTube, download, or (if your really unlucky) on CD, at least once. I have heard all the talk of this band, Waking the Cadaver, being utter garbage, and I'm here to tell you the rumors are not wrong. This is a level of true wretchedness and repulsiveness that can only be reached with true effort.

Now, I like death metal, and even some deathcore. I love me some Morbid Angel (NOT Illud Divinum Insanus), Cannibal Corpse, and even Whitechapel are passable. This album is just ridiculous though. I can't even call this "music", and if "terrible grating of the poor listener's ears for nearly half-an-hour" is music, then music is dead.

The aforomentioned song, "Chased Through The Woods By A Rapist", has a pretty cool sound clip intro with some guy saying "There are no typical murderers. Some plan their crimes maticulously, while others kill on impulse." It reminds me of something Electric Wizard or Noothgrush would do. And then, then, this noise comes in, this horrible pig wailing sounds while clanging and bashing noises commence in the background...and then you realize this is supposed to be music and vocals.

Seriously, the "musicianship" on this album is utterly atrocious. Vocalist Don Campan tries his best to imitate a pig/frog hybrid on some serious doses of coke, and even if the music here was respectable, the vocals would totally destroy it because they are really that bad. Even if you have the lyrics in front of you, you can't understand them! The "music", like I said, is not much better, hell it's even worse. There are no "riffs" on this album. Just mindless, brainless and airy chugging which is almost inaudible under the drums and vocals, which are unfortunately the main focal point of this album.

Alot of people say good things about the drummer, but he is honestly terrible. There is no real beat anywhere on here, and I cannot distinguish anything different about his drum patterns. It literally sounds like he went into his kitchen, banged on a couple of pots and pans, recorded it and threw it onto this album which would, even without the drums, be repulsive. Also, the bass is completely nonexistent.

Also, whenever discussing this band, you must also mention one thing - the abnormal amount of breakdowns. Literally every song here consists of this one stinkin' breakdown which just bathes in repitition for two minutes. Literally half of the album is just silence because of these breakdowns, but that is a positive because it spares the listeners ears of listening to this abominable crap!

Oh, and lets not forget the lyrics, oh ho the lyrics, if you can even call them that. These lyrics are as gory, violent, and offensive as they come. Normally, this would be a good thing, but these lyrics are so ridiculous that they stop becoming scary and just become utterly stupid and offensive. If these talentless hacks actually treated women like this, they should be thrown in the slammer. I'm not even a woman, and this is offending.

The titles of these songs alone are worth every drop of vomit in your stomach. Forget bedroom black metal, nu-metal, and your neo-Metallicas, THIS is the kind of thing that is killing good music as we know it. THIS is the exact type of music that is totally deserving of a .5 rating. Waking The Cadaver is a plague. Everything about it is sour. This is one of the single worst albums I have ever heard in my entire life, with no redeeming qualities. I can only reccomend it to the biggest goregrind/slam death fan. If you don't fall into the latter categories, if you ever come across this album, just turn the hell around and run.

Waking the Cadaver are viewed in a pretty negative light all around. Today, I finally decided to look into their debut album 'Perverse Recollections of a Necromangler'.

While not the most embarrassing death metal act around, this is still pretty dismal. Vocals are extremely incoherent growls. Now, I don't expect death growls to sound pretty, but I can't make out what they are saying at all; but then again, if you look at their pleasant lyrics (think Spermswamp), not making out the lyrics is probably a good thing.

The musicianship isn't really bad, but it is repetitive. I could have just heard one song nine times and gotten the same effect from listening to the entire album from beginning to end.

What separates this band from Spermswamp's level of bad is that Waking the Cadaver uses an actual drummer, their production is not as dismal, there's a more overbearing sense of actual metal in this. Still not recommended.
