Doom Metal

MetalMusicArchives.com — the ultimate metal music online community, from the creators of progarchives.com

Doom metal is an extreme form of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much 'thicker' or 'heavier' sound than other metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom. The genre is strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath, who formed a prototype for doom metal with songs such as "Black Sabbath" and "Into the Void". During the first half of the 1980s, a number of bands from England (Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General) and the United States (Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble) defined doom metal as a distinct genre.

MOUNTAIN WITCH Extinct Cults

Warthur
Brief, fairly straight-ahead doom metal effort with strong trad doom and hard rock influences. The cover art is neat and the production helps evoke an early doom sound, but precisely because the imitation of the early doom style is so close, if you're into the likes of Pentagram or Saint Vitus or Trouble then you've probably heard plenty of heavier, doomier takes on very similar material before. I could have done with a touch more psych in the balance here; as it stands, this is the sort of thing I can have in the background happily and enjoy myself when it's there, but don't really remember much compelling about once the music stops playing.

COFFINS Beyond the Circular Demise

Warthur
"Middle of the road death metal" is something of a contradiction in terms, especially when it comes to stuff which captures the aura of the 1990s pioneers as deftly as Coffins do on Beyond the Circular Demise. It's solid, entertaining stuff for sure - but it's also so straight-down-the-line as to be unmemorable, without much distinguishing it from the output of other old school death metal practitioners beyond the odd touch of death-doom influences here and there, such as on Impuritious Minds. The production also isn't quite at the level it needs to be to get the best out of the more intricate material, and I can't help but think it'd be more memorable and more rewarding on repeated listens if there were a bit more clarity on that front.

ESTATIC FEAR A Sombre Dance

SilentScream213
Estatic Fear released just two masterpiece albums in their short career, both of them lush with folky acoustic passages, flutes and strings mixed in with crushing Doom/Death Doom. A Sombre Dance features one long suite split up into much shorter tracks (as opposed to the first album, which featured two primary tracks totaling over 50 minutes). The shorter tracks make for a much more digestible album, and the Dark Folk passages are intelligently mixed into the songs rather than being cut into quick interlude tracks.

This album features more clean female vocals, and more Neoclassical Darkwave keywork which gives it a slightly Gothic flavor. The Death Doom is still as strong as ever, driven by liberal double bass drumming and tremolo lead guitars. A great variety in power, heaviness, and speed across even individual tracks makes it an incredible joy to listen to (despite how sombre and melancholic it is). Insecure listeners beware, for what one might call “cheese” permeates every corner, as a fantastical, dramatic showing is the name of the game for this Doom album.

And yet, to me, “cheesy” would be the wrong word. How about “classy”? The strings and melodrama here sound nothing of Power Metal or regular Symphonic Metal taste; rather, it evokes true Classical moods and compositions somewhere between the Medieval era and the Baroque era. Basically, unless you want to call Classical Music cheesy, there’s really nothing cheesy about this! Put on your best palace suit or dress and get ready to attend this funeral in a fairytale garden.

OCTOBER TIDE Grey Dawn

UMUR
"Grey Dawn" is the second full-length studio album by Swedish doom/death metal act October Tide. The album was released through Avantgarde Music in November 1999. It´s the successor to "Rain Without End" from 1997 and there´s been one lineup change as lead vocalist Mårten Hansen has been added to the ranks, making October Tide a trio on "Grey Dawn". Band founders Fredrik Norrman (guitars, bass) and Jonas Renkse (drums, guitars) are still present. The latter has completely abandoned performing vocals (which he performed on the debut album), so Hansen is the sole vocalist on "Grey Dawn".

"Rain Without End (1997)" sounded pretty similar to early Katatonia (Renkse´s and Norrman´s other contemporary band), featuring a melodic and melancholic doom/death metal style with growling vocals. That music style is more or less continued on "Grey Dawn", but Hansen has a slightly more blackened type growl than Renkse´s ditto on the predecessor. The quality of the material is decent, but "Grey Dawn" is not the most memorable album in the genre, and a few more catchy moments would have made this a stronger release.

The musicianship is strong, although Renkse´s simplistic and one-dimensional approach to drumming is hard to appreciate. It´s the dark and melancholic atmosphere and the heavy riffs and guitar lead themes which are the assets of the album. The sound production is professional and detailed, and upon conclusion "Grey Dawn" is a quality doom/death metal release by October Tide. To my ears the debut album was just a little more interesting and a little more memorable too, but this one is entertaining enough while it plays. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.

VENI DOMINE IIII - The Album of Labour

UMUR
"IIII - The Album of Labour" is the fourth full-length studio album by Swedish doom metal act Veni Domine. The album was released by Rivel Records in August 2004. It´s the successor to "Spiritual Wasteland" from 1998 and it features one lineup change since the predecessor as keyboard player Mattias Cederlund has been replaced by Mats Lidbrandt. The material on the album was long in the making and writing for the album began as far back as 1997 and the recordings started in the fall of 2000. I´m not sure if the album title is meant to reflect how much work the band had to put into the making of the album, or if it´s just coincidental, but the fact is, it´s an album which took a long time to write, record, and release.

Stylistically Veni Domine still sounds like a combination of the melodic and epic doom metal of Candlemass and the melodic and semi-progressive heavy/power metal of Queensrÿche. It´s impossible not to think of Geoff Tate when you hear Fredrik Ohlsson sing. His voice and delivery are very similar to Tate´s work with Queensrÿche, but Veni Domine are generally a much more heavy and doomy band, so they are by no means a Queensrÿche clone. Heavy power chord riffs and equally heavy drums, complimented by atmospheric keyboards, and the occasional lead guitar line or solo. You´ll notice right away how well playing Veni Domine are. These are high level musicians and Ohlsson is a worldclass singer.

While the material is well composed, the slow pace still means that the album sometimes feels at little long as it features eleven tracks and a total playing time of 56:38 minutes. More varied tempos and moods (this is epic and melancholic all the way through) could maybe have provided the album with the needed diversity. Every song on the album is a high quality composition, so there´s nothing wrong with the individual tracks. It´s the overall package of the album, which ends up a bit one-dimensional. "IIII - The Album of Labour" features a detailed, professional, and well sounding production job, so other than the feeling that most tracks use just about the same elements and therefore become a little formulaic, this is a good quality doom metal release from Veni Domine. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

PARADISE LOST Live Death

Movie · 2004 · Death-Doom Metal

Considering this was actually released on VHS in 1990, Paradise Lost must surely overestimate the passion and loyalty of their fan club. Filmed in Bradford in 1989 to coincide with the band’s debut album, this is a 30-minute video of the band playing on stage. They barely move around, you barely see glimpses of the crowd, and in fact, you barely see vocalist Nick Holmes’ face due to his shaggy hair constantly covering it.

I’m not really a fan of their earlier, death metal growly material anyway, but even if I was, this video isn’t enjoyable or interesting to watch at all. Re-released in 2004 on DVD, this isn’t worth the 50p I spent on it if not for the fact that I do, in fact, actually like this band, and have a compulsive obsession to own everything a band puts out.
